Pr5-Ex1: Still Life Sketches of Made Objects

Exercise 1: man made objects still life compositions.

Exercise 1: man made objects still life compositions.

For the first exercise I used a soft toy rat made using an interesting corduroy material.

  • A4 sketch book
  • Blue biro
  • black biro

The first thumb nail composition ended up being too big. It became a detailed study of the composition in biro. I quite like the way the cap, peek pointing down, and the pot on  the right echo the shape of rat toy on the left creating a sort of mirrored effect.

It took me three sittings to finish this study.

I chose to use lighter strokes with the cap and pot and was more vague shading these in as I wanted the rat to remain the focus of the drawing. The shading on the cap started a little heavy. This I addressed in the further studies I made of it on the opposite page.

Probably about 5 hours went into it. I think it has an illustrative quality.

The next two thumbnails were more on brief. I explored a couple more compositions using brief sketches to lay out the items. I finished by including a small brief study of the items on their own.
